Stephen Hersey Founder & President Prior to founding Books for America, Steve served in concurrent roles at one of the nation’s leading association management companies, the Association Management Group in McLean, VA. He served as a program manager for a national industry foundation and Director of Marketing and Government Affairs for a national medical association. He also served as an account executive for an in-house public relations agency specializing in strategic marketing and public-relations planning and execution for non-profit and association clients. Steve has also marketed a start-up debit account program for the George Washington University in Washington, DC. Developing a corporate fundraising program at The Nature Conservancy in Arlington, VA, was the first stop in his career.
Steve was a keynote speaker on entrepreneurship and was named Alumnus of the Year at the George Washington University School of Business and Public Management Leadership Retreat in 1997. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance from The George Washington University.
Karen Cipriani Founding Director Karen Cipriani works on employment matters for Lexington Insurance Company in Boston, MA. Prior to joining Lexington, Karen worked as an attorney representing charities, professional and trade associations, and other nonprofit organizations. At the Washington DC offices of Jenner & Block and Shaw Pittman, she counseled clients in many areas of nonprofit law, including incorporation and governance issues, tax exemption, intellectual property, antitrust policy, government relations activities, and other matters. She is admitted to practice in Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Massachusetts.
Karen attended Stanford University and received a Bachelor of Arts with distinction. She earned her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.
Kate Bishop Director Kate Bishop has worked for Blackboard, Inc., a leading provider of e-Education software, since August 2000. She has worn a variety of hats, most notably as the Senior Manager of the training department, where she led a team responsible for helping faculty and students put their coursework online. She is currently a Solutions Engineer, traveling across the country as a Blackboard Expert to help clients and future clients implement e-Learning at their institutions.
Before working at Blackboard, Kate was the webmaster for Smithsonian Magazine, helped launch Georgetown University's Communication, Culture, and Technology graduate program, and served as the Director of Graduate Programs for the Princeton Review. Kate was also the About.com Guide to DC for several years.
Kate has a BA in English from Connecticut College, an MA in English Literature from Georgetown University
